Anaheim businesses organize anti-Disney vote for zoning power
Thursday, July 12, 2007 9:15 AM ET | contributed by Jeff

A coalition of Anaheim business owners and residents announced Wednesday that they would pursue a ballot initiative to give voters zoning control over the Disney's planned third theme park. If the City Council puts the measure on the ballot, it could join two Disney-backed ballot measures — an initiative and a referendum — aimed at preserving nonresidential zoning in the area adjacent to Disneyland and California Adventure. Supporters of the latest measure, including a developer hoping to build housing near Disneyland, are asking the council to directly place it on the ballot. Disney and its supporters collected signatures for the other two measures, neither of which has yet been approved for the ballot.

This is exactly why Disney created their own government in Florida and annexed themselves from Orange and Osceola counties. It's too bad they can't do the same thing in California.

Government can pretty much do whatever they want whenever they want (see eminent domain). Private companies…? Just how free and private are they? Yet, in most circumstances the masses will line up to denounce mean old private companies while rarely applying the same standards of condemnation for governmental agencies. I hope Disney prevails in this battle for no other reason than to promote a small semblance of private property owner rights.

This might be the first time I've ever heard of a citizens' group formed to support residential development.

Not uncommon out here, they are usually a front for and totally supported by the developers.

Right...if you own a home, why would you want to increase supply?

In any case, I heard a rumor that the deveoper and Disney might have reached a compromise.
