YAY! A new woodie at my home park. The video looks awesome. There don't seem to be any trims (knock on wood). It looks like there will be some good air. Yep, this is all good. The press release says that they will begin construction when they get the permits so that explains the apparent delay. Hopefully it won't take too long. Wow, I am so happy for this ride. I will probably be there every day next year.
Coasterbuzzer (Edit)     9/21/2006 9:21:23 AM
With this addition and Maverick, Italian Job, it seems that parks are beginning to realize that record breakers are not necessarily the way to go. Maybe this is signaling a change in the industry?
Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     9/21/2006 9:22:06 AM
Anyone catch this quote under the Cowboy Slang section:
"For an American Coaster Enthusiast, riding Renegade is like lickin’ butter off a knife (something that’s easy)"

LOL!

Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     9/21/2006 9:22:56 AM
It's getting too expensive to break records. Time to focus on quality attractions.

I did see the ACE comment, hysterical. Also, did anyone notice the announcement says this is the park's 7th coaster? That means they are not counting Mild Thing, just as they shouldn't. That goes for parks AND enthusiasts.*** This post was edited by RavenTTD 9/21/2006 9:30:47 AM ***

My first impression of Renegade is that it could seriously challenge Lightning Racer as the "funnest" wooden coaster I've ridden. I've been impressed with every GCII layout but there is something about this one that makes me really want to ride it NOW. Kudos to GCII and Valleyfair on what looks to be a phenomenal coaster.

Please, please, please let this be the start of a trend at Cedar Fair parks!

A Cedar Fair park is building a WOOD coaster?

I didn't see any pigs fly outside the window this morning. I'm gonna take a look again.

RavenTTD, maybe they forgot about Excalibur just like the GP did.

I find it interesting that both of CFs new coasters next year are a western theme. I visited VF for the first time this summer and I don't recall a 'western' themed section of the park. Did I miss that?
Peabody (Edit)     9/21/2006 9:47:34 AM
This + Marverick = The 2 best coasters CF has possibly built in thelast 20-25 years.

I've been VERY "blah" about VF before. It's a nice park with some nice rides. (Certainly more enjoyable as a park than most SF parks ) Now it's going to be a nice park with some nice rides + 1 killer, world class ride *** This post was edited by Peabody 9/21/2006 9:51:20 AM ***

Rob Ascough (Edit)     9/21/2006 10:02:22 AM
Nice. Nice. NICE.

Hopefully this helps prove to Cedar Fair that wood coasters DO make a lot of sense when done right!

SLFAKE (Edit)     9/21/2006 10:03:26 AM
Looking at the videos, this could quite possibly be GCI's greatest coaster to date.

Great looking layout... more out and back than "twister"... and Mellinium Flyer trains!

My wife and I were just talking about where we might go on next year's vacation... looks like Shakopee Minnesota might be it.

scraperguy99 (Edit)     9/21/2006 10:04:27 AM
Looks great from the rendering...so glad to see this announcement. I hope more CF parks get GCIs....(hopefully one really close to me) in the near future.

I can't get the videos to load though...it says the trains are Millenium Flyers...24 people per train, 4 people per car? What do these trains look like? I thought LR's MFs were 2 people per car? Are these different from the ones in use at Hershey?

tambo (Edit)     9/21/2006 10:05:30 AM
Let's hold off on proclaiming this "The Greatest Ride Ever" until someone actually rides it.

It doesn't seem to be as much of a twister as some of the other GCI's, so I'll hold off judgement until I actually ride it, although I haven't been on a GCI that I didn't like.

Well, this is not going to be the greatest ride ever. Even if every element they designed works perfectly it will not be as good as The Voyage. However it still looks very very good. I think it will be second to Thunderhead for GCIIs but it could be better...or worse. The important thing however is that it is already better than all of VF's other coasters.
Acoustic Viscosity (Edit)     9/21/2006 11:09:12 AM
IMO, the layout "looks" kinda boring, BUT as long as the forces are there, it should be a great ride. For comparison, I think Thunderhead "looks" wayyy more interesting, BUT my two visits have never delivered anything sooper dooper. I'm hoping GCI is pushing the intensity factor further than they ever have before.
Kick The Sky (Edit)     9/21/2006 11:24:39 AM
"For an American Coaster Enthusiast, riding Renegade is like lickin’ butter off a knife (something that’s easy)"

or how about like lickin' gravy off the buffet table...

Coasterphan (Edit)     9/21/2006 11:40:41 AM
Well the 1st ever twisting first drop stat is a lie.

Anybody ever have a chance to ride Fiesta Texas Rattler before the butcher job? Now that was a twisting 1st drop.

RoarsLoudly (Edit)     9/21/2006 11:50:49 AM
Hopefully when Cedar Point finally builds that extremely anticipated wood coaster they will go with GCI w/MF trains instead of Intamin and design the GREATEST wood coaster in the world period!!
CoastersNSich (Edit)     9/21/2006 11:54:01 AM

Fun Fact:
The song “Renegade” was a 1979 hit for American rock band Styx.

Probably my favorite part.

RavenTTD (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:04:03 PM
Okay, I have been watching all the videos for a while now and I am starting to think this ride will be better than I originally thought. It should have about the same speed as Thunderhead (about the same height and length) and while it won't have as many small pops of air, it does seem to have several sustained airtime moments. I really can't wait to ride this sucker in the rain.
crombiedude11 (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:13:54 PM
yeah I agree ^^^
RoarsLoudly (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:22:32 PM
By the way---------nothing can challenge "Lightning Racer" in any shape or form. That ride is simply poetry in motion.
RavenTTD (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:26:57 PM
Whatever. I get more air watching Renegade's POV than I do on Lightning Racer.
Coasterbuzzer (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:35:11 PM
This does look like a great coaster. I would definitely like to see a new woodie at Cedar Point. From the TR's that I have read, El Toro is pretty good as well, so it wouldn't bother me if CP got one from Intamin or GCI.
RoarsLoudly (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:50:54 PM
I would just love to see some new wood at the Point regardless of the manufacturer. 125-180Ft and over 5,000 ft of track would be nice! Veery nice!!
Raven you need to stop looking at videos and get to these rides!
LOL
RavenTTD (Edit)     9/21/2006 12:57:23 PM
I have been on LR and Thunderhead so I do get to the rides. I was just saying that the POV of Renegade has more air than the actual Lightning Racer does.

850 people per hour?

is this good for valleyfair?

RavenTTD (Edit)     9/21/2006 2:22:28 PM
RoarsLoudly, I was not upset with you. I just thought you misunderstood what I was saying.

Regarding the capacity, this ride is so good for VF that I don't care about the capacity. I will say however that I think the info on the trains is incorrect. A 12 car 2 bench per car train is just too long. The normal Millennium Flyer trains are 12 cars and just one bench and that is what I think this is too. The 24 riders per train makes more sense with the capacity claims as well. I will say that VF has been more crowded in recent years so I would expect long lines on the busy days, but we can still go on off days and even better rainy days. And even if us locals do have to wait in a long line, it probably won't be as long as the drive to another park.

edit: I should have said rcdb's info on the trains is not correct. VF's may have been too but it is right now.*** This post was edited by RavenTTD 9/21/2006 2:32:37 PM ***

Neato design. Reminds me very much of the second half of Texas Giant, or even GhostRider.
Rob Ascough (Edit)     9/21/2006 3:08:10 PM
I like that GCI is mixing more out-and-back elements into their designs. I'd love to see what the company is capable of doing with the basic, traditional out-and-back!
RavenTTD (Edit)     9/21/2006 3:14:26 PM
I think I spoke too soon when I said this ride will have less airtime moments than Thunderhead. I am counting 10-12 potential airtime moments in the POV which is about what Thunderhead has. GCI has shown to me that they can deliver air in those spots and considering that some of these on Renegade are longer floats, this could be an airtime machine if everything goes like it could. I can't wait to find out for sure.
macho nachos (Edit)     9/21/2006 3:53:05 PM
I'd like to see GCI do that as well Rob. Renegade looks great and I agree the long floater air could reallly be amazing.

Building a good relationship with GCI may get them hired in on refurbishing some of the other wood coasters in the Cedar Fair Chain.
You won't see Flyer trains on those, but many problems could be solved.

^You mean like Timber Wolf?

I keep running the thought through my head of GCII building at WOF before Coaster Con is there in 2008.

DorneyDante (Edit)     9/21/2006 6:03:07 PM
I'm extremely happy for Valleyfair for getting such a unique addition for a CF park. The design looks fantastic. I'm pleased to see GCI pushing the envelope in terms of height. One of their tallest to date.
CoasterDiscern (Edit)     9/21/2006 6:19:57 PM
Good day today or what!

Anyway, looks like a well designed and thought through ride.

Have fun!

TCKR (Edit)     9/21/2006 6:31:30 PM
Okay, I admit it. I'm jealous. Jealous that Valleyfair! is getting this ride and not Cedar Point. I would happily trade Maverick for this beauty. I do realize that a GCI may show up at CP in a couple years, but I don't wanna wait. I want my GCI now, dammit!

In any case, congrats to the Valleyfair! fans. Renegade will undoubtedly kick butter!

Borntocoast (Edit)     9/21/2006 6:48:58 PM
In two weeks I'll be using the free ticket I got from American Airlines while en route to HWN/RF to gp to Pennsylvania to attend PPP. If American Airlines decides to pass out some more freebies look out Minnesota, Here I Come!!!

(That's one for every Coaster I was able to ride because of an Overbooked Flight Compensation!)

Amnesiac (Edit)     9/21/2006 8:05:20 PM
Looks like a quality coaster, too bad I'm not likely to get there to ride it anytime soon. Hopefully we'll see more Cedar Fair parks getting rides like.

SLFAKE (Edit)     9/22/2006 8:57:58 AM

I like that GCI is mixing more out-and-back elements into their designs.

Exactly. And that is why I said that, to me, this looks like it could be GCI's greatest to date. Not declaring it the number one coaster before it was built... just saying that it looks like it could be a true work of art and a truely great coaster. And hey... Mellinium Flyer Trains! Those things could jump the track, go crashing over a cliff, hitting every single rock on the way down and, while being an intense ride and brutal ride, it would still be done in comfort.

Timo (Edit)     9/22/2006 9:26:13 AM
Aaron - They must have re-written because they had the following quote with your name and also a credit to Coasterbuzz.com.
"My first impression of Renegade is that it could seriously challenge Lightning Racer as the "funnest" wooden coaster I've ridden.

Impulsive-"Wow, looks great, can't wait to see it along the Lake Erie beach in '09 "

And even more excited to see it's brother at Dorney in '08

Although 850 isn't great, it certainly does the job. On the days I go, steel venom (which has a similar pph) has no more than a 20 minute wait. I have NEVER seen wild thing's whole cue used up except when if first opened. I think the PPH will be fine.
SFGAdv lover (Edit)     9/23/2006 8:51:19 PM
So why didn't we find Renegade on the trademark website... is there already a ride with this name at one of CF's parks?
RavenTTD (Edit)     9/24/2006 11:55:11 AM
It was a song and a TV show.
RatherGoodBear (Edit)     9/24/2006 10:34:17 PM
Maverick was a TV show too. Plus the name of an NBA team.
rollergator (Edit)     9/25/2006 11:48:51 AM
^ Can we make a *trade* and get Mark Cuban to run SFI instead? I mean, just look at the respective records of the Mavs and the 'Skins...

Mark Cuban, may be a MFFL (Mavs fan for life)....but he's also a MFL (maverick for life).

Maybe it's just that CF can be the NBA league, and that SFI will stick with the NFL? It's MY time now, pro sports and parks ARE merging...
